Santa Barbara is one of California's most beautiful towns. Old Spanish buildings dot the city landscape. The preservationists seem to be in control as evidenced by the local Rite- Aid and McDonalds bearing tiny gold signs instead of the usual neon. It is a welcome change from the hectic city lights, noise and pollution that many of us have become accustomed to.
My husband and I enjoyed getting to know Santa Barbara on foot since the Inn was within walking distance of State Street, the main drag. In the immediate area there is a wide array of charming stores, restaurants and movie theaters plus the Santa Barbara Art Museum.
The Inn of the Spanish Garden pays careful attention to its setting and history. Regarded as Santa Barbara's only luxury downtown hotel, The Inn was just celebrating its first anniversary when we visited. Situated on the upper part of Garden Street, The Inn is a fine example of Spanish-Mediterranean design reflected in the bright white buildings, Spanish tile roofs and pretty courtyards, accented by fountains and colorful local flowers.

The Inn of the Spanish Garden boasts a total of 23 spacious non-smoking rooms. Each of the rooms includes a gas fireplace, luxurious Frette linens and a deep soaking tub. Most of the rooms have patios allowing guests to enjoy the colorful landscaping. Breakfast and a simple afternoon wine tasting are served in a sunny room next to the lobby. The intimate lobby has a very complete book of local restaurant menus and the staff will be happy to make reservations for you.

On a Saturday morning, we enjoyed a leisurely walk around the historic Presidio area adjacent to the Inn en route to the celebrated Open Air Market--definitely worth a detour. The quality and varieties of flowers and produce is dazzling.
For dinner try Ca'Dario, a simple bustling trattoria, an easy walk from The Inn. Super Rica, the famed taco stand, is a must; make sure to order the Super Rica Special ( grilled pork, poblano chilies and melted cheese on a tortilla). For lunch or dinner, check out Brophy Brothers on the Harbor for true California ambience. The fish is fresh and simply prepared. Plan ahead on putting your name on the list and take a walk on the pier while you are waiting. There are no reservations.
The Inn of the Spanish Garden offers special packages. They include a Romance Package, a Santa Barbara Car Free Package, Surf and Stay Package and a Wine Lovers Package. In the future small weddings will be available in the courtyard with an adjoining banquet facility. If you're dreaming of a memorable Southern California getaway, you can't go wrong with The Inn of the Spanish Garden.
